How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy - by Jenny Odell
About: This is a fast paced and well written essay on attention, and how to reclaim our time and attention which is manipulated and exploited by capitalism. It is not anti-tech, but does focus on social media's distracting and dulling effect on our attention. This is a book I would recommend to literally anyone. It is empathetic and poignant, and deserves your attention ;Dpast recommendations:
Radicalizing Her: Why Women Choose Violence - by Nimmi Gowrinathan
This book explores why women choose to participate in violent revolutions. The author focuses on the Sri Lankan Civil War, and how her family members participated or were otherwise affected by it. It is very anecdotal at parts. I ultimately enjoyed it but I did expect it to cover more of history's female fighters. I recommend it to anyone interested in revolutionary political work, and/or feminism.Who Fears Death - by Nnedi Okorafor
This is a supernatural sci-fi fantasy book set in post-nuclear Africa that focuses on themes of motherhood, prejudice, and genocide. I couldn't put this book down. It is beautifully written and wonderfully paced. The characters are complex and well done. Brace yourself for pain and heartbreak, but also beauty and underdog resilience!
